Custom Blaster Review: Zombat Recon

One of my favorite blasters is my Zombat Recon. One of my most unique looking blasters, it is styled after a CQB M4, utilizing a folding stock, shortened barrel, and integrated foregrip.

The Zombat Recon's inspiration came from the Echo 1 Zombat Stryker, a custom airsoft gun for CQB. As I would be building this blaster for Humans vs. Zombies use, I thought it would be appropriate to style this blaster after an airsoft gun designed for the zombie apocalypse. The most unique aspects of this blaster are its external modifications, including a solidified folding stock, a shortened inner and outer barrel, and an integrated airsoft fiberglass foregrip.

The stock on this blaster was taken from a Nerf Spectre, the silenced pistol that came with a flimsy folding stock. To solidify the stock, I cut down a piece of 1/2 inch PVC pipe and weaved it through the curves of the stock, so that it was jammed tightly through the center of the stock. The PVC was then encased in black duct tape, to keep it from wobbling under tension, and also to limit the amount of "PVC white" if on the outside of the blaster. Now, when the blaster is pushed up against its user's shoulder, the tension is transferred through the PVC, directly into the main blaster itself. This stock is as strong is now stronger than the Nerf Raider Stock.

The cool part is that although the stock is very solid, it can still fold alongside the blaster. this is extremely helpful when moving around tight corners or packing the blaster away in a bag.

This blaster is also unique because it has a shortened front barrel, which took a great deal of planning and measuring to get exactly right. The inner barrel actually goes through the red cap on the front, which meant that I could not just cut a recon front barrel in half and super glue on the original red cap. Instead, I had to disassemble the front barrel, cut the outer and inner barrels to different lengths, and reassemble the barrel to make it look nice.

The foregrip on this blaster is a standard fiberglass foregrip for airsoft guns. It did not fit perfectly on the rail system, so it is permanently glued there. This foregrip adds a ton of stability to the blaster, and makes the blaster extremely accurate when moving quickly.

Like many of my other blasters, the stock, front barrel, and accessories (expect for the foregrip) are completely removable and interchangable. This means I can stick a shortened barrel on any other Nerf blaster with an attachment point, such as the Deploy, Longstrike, Spectre, and soon, the Rayven.

Internally, the blaster has the AR removed, and used to have the Orange Mod Works Stage 1 upgrades. After only a few shots, the Stage 1 kit proved too powerful, and blew the plunger tube apart, and I needed to swap out the internals from another Recon. Using the stock spring, however, this blaster is shooting about 40 feet level, and very rarely makes darts fishtail. It has never jammed with new darts.
Although I usually try to get maximum range out of my blasters, this one really doesn't need it. Considering it was built for super- close encounters, it doesn't need to shoot more than 20 feet.
