Opinion: The Foam Shotgun

Foam shotguns are interesting blasters. They can be awesome tools when playing Humans vs. Zombies when large hordes are approaching and are great in indoor CQB battles. However, shotguns run the potential to loose two important factors in a battle; range and accuracy.

Shotguns such as the Nerf Barrel Break, Buzz Bee Double Shot, Lanard Shot Gun, and Nerf Hornet all have one thing in common; they are capable of firing more than one dart at once.

The advantages of firing multiple darts at once are that darts are able to cover a greater area, and can engage multiple targets (Zombies or other players) at once. A double barrel blaster is useful when your first shot misses, but you are able to fire out a second shot immediately. A triple barrel blaster is useful when your target is skilled at dodging darts. Foam shotguns with more than three barrels are great for last second shots, or spraying an incoming crowd with darts.

The real fun comes when your foam shotgun is modified. To build any effective foam shotgun, modification or custom building is generally necessary. For example, taking the air restrictors out of a Lanard Shot Gun can increase its range to 80 feet. Converting a Nerf Titan into a four to six barrel shotgun can get multiple darts flying 100 feet at once. Converting a Buzz Bee Missile Blast into a shotgun can spread 6 darts out 10 feet and send them 30 feet away.

By far the most realistic and suppressive foam shotgun I've ever come across is called the Scatterblast. A custom built foam shotgun, the Scatterblast is capable of firing over 30 darts at once, and reloading in only a few seconds.

Pictured here, the Scatterblast is a pressure pump connected by a female/ male adapter to 6 PVC barrels, each holding 6+ darts. The Scatterblast is capable of firing all 30+ darts at once with significant distance. Because of a female/ male adapter, the Scatterblast can be re-loaded very quickly with replacement pre-loaded barrels. This foam shotgun is perfect for Humans vs. Zombies. In one shot, an entire horde of Zombies can be split up.

Once a nice balance of power, dart distance, dart spread and average reload time is found, a foam shotgun is ready for battle. When choosing between foam blasters before a battle, remember that the foam shotgun can be useful if you'll be playing indoors or facing multiple opponents at once. Also remember that foam shotguns generally take a longer time to reload (and sometimes re-pressurize) before they are ready to fire again.

Foam shotguns are definitely blasters worth looking into if you regularly play indoors or play Humans vs. Zombies. Just be prepared to modify them a bit before they can outperform other blasters.
